The Tennis Betting Basics

Tennis betting odds are based on who is expected to win during a match or tournament. This is usually displayed as a number with a plus sign in front of it. The biggest favorites in a tennis tournament are usually somewhere between +200 and +400 while the biggest underdogs can be found in the +10000 to +20000 range.

This means that if a player is +200 and you bet $100, you would get $200 in profit if that player wins the tournament. Or, if you bet $100 on a player who was +20000 and they won, you would get $20,000 in profit for that bet.

Just like in other major sports such as baseball and basketball, the most popular way to bet on tennis is by playing the moneyline, or betting on which player will win the match. That means all you have to do is select the right fighter to win and you’ll cash out. The three most common tennis bets bettors place are Moneyline, Match Betting, and Set Spread.

Different Types of Tennis Bets

Outright Winner

An outright winner bet is sometimes referred to as a “to win” bet or a moneyline bet. This bet is the simplest bet on the list and probably a great starting point if you are new to tennis betting. Think a player is going to win the next tournament? You can bet on them with an outright winner bet, and if they win, you win. Before a major tournament, you should be able to get betting odds on every player who is competing.

Match/Set Betting

A match bet is similar to an outright winner bet, except instead of picking the winner of an entire tournament, you are picking the winner of a single match or set. Many times, tennis matches will feature big odds to level the playing field.

For example with match betting, if Player 1 is a -1,100 favorite over Player 2 in a 3-set match, the game spread may be around -4.5. That means Player 1 would need to win five more games than Player 2 in the match (6-2, 6-3) to cover the spread. With set betting, if Player 1 is favored in their match over Player 1, they will also be available at -1.5 sets. If you bet on Player 1 -1.5 sets and they win in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) you win the bet. If Player 2 wins a set, you’d lose.

Over/Under

An over/under tennis bet is a bet on how many sets the match will take to complete. As is customary with over/under bets, you aren’t required to pick a winner, you only have to pick the duration of the match correctly. In a three match format, you’ll have the option of betting over or under 2.5 sets.

Exact Score

If you’re feeling pretty confident in your tennis betting strategy, exact score betting might be right for you. These bets allow you to try to predict the exact score of each set or the exact number of sets won by each opponent. As you can imagine, this is probably pretty challenging. If you manage to predict correctly, you should expect a pretty healthy payday.

Prop Bets

Tennis prop bets can be a fun and profitable way for you to make some money betting on the sport. Prop bets are wagers where the sportsbook proposes something to happen, and you bet on whether or not you think that is going to happen. Tennis prop bets might include which player will last the longest in a tournament, whether there will be a tie-break, which round a player will be eliminated, or how many games will be played in a match.
