Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, which is the version of the calendar everyone hopes for and only gets every several years. No Tuesday-night compromise, no taking Friday off. Just a full weekend where the entire city has an excuse to be in costume and party.

Downtown is where that plays out best, where costume contests are free, the crowds are thick enough to people-watch for hours, everything sits within a few blocks, and nobody’s paying Strip prices for a drink. Here’s what’s worth building a Halloween in Las Vegas trip around this year, starting closest to the front door.

 

Costumes Under The Canopy at Fremont Street

 

Five blocks of neon, several thousand people in costume, and no cover charge. Fremont Street Experience runs its Halloween celebration all month, with Viva Vision light shows going seasonal at the top of every hour from 6 p.m.

The main event is the costume contest on October 31. Registration opens at 6 p.m. at the check-in table behind the 3rd Street Stage, next to the D, and closes at 8:30 p.m. sharp. Contestants must be 21 or older with valid ID. Entry is free, and prizes run up to $5,000 across the winners. Judges favor handmade and heavily customized costumes, so a store-bought getup will get you in but probably not onto the podium.

Previous year’s contest drew roughly 6,000 people to the 3rd Street Stage and more than 100 people lining up for a spot among about 30 finalists. Register early!

 

Universal Horror Unleashed

 

The biggest addition to Halloween in Las Vegas in recent years doesn’t actually shut down in November. Universal Horror Unleashed occupies 110,000 square feet next to AREA15 and runs year-round, built by the team behind Halloween Horror Nights.

Four haunted houses anchor it: Universal Monsters, Scarecrow: The Reaping, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Blumhouse’s The Exorcist: Believer. Between them sit themed zones, bars, roaming characters, and live shows, which means it works as an evening rather than a twenty-minute walkthrough. General admission starts around $49 for one pass through each house, with unlimited-access and Nevada resident options available. There’s also a cheaper ticket for anyone who wants the atmosphere without the jump scares.

It isn’t recommended for anyone under 13, and costumes and costume masks aren’t allowed inside, which sounds strange for a horror attraction until you picture the security problem.

 

 

Haunted Heights at Legacy Club

 

Sixty floors above Fremont Street, Legacy Club turns into Haunted Heights on Saturday, October 31, starting at 8 p.m. Entry is complimentary. Tables are available if you’d rather not fight for space, and the costume contest pays out $5,000 to one guest.

DJs run the night across a rotating set list, and the bar program leans into the season with Halloween cocktails that go past food coloring and a plastic spider. Costumes are expected rather than optional here, but Legacy Club still enforces upscale nightlife attire. That rules out full face paint, simulated weapons, and any mask covering most of your face. Plan something that photographs well and still gets you past the door.

 

Zak Bagans’ Haunted Museum

 

The Haunted Museum sits in a 1938 mansion a few minutes from Downtown and stays open year-round, which makes October the busiest but not the only time to go. The collection centers on objects with documented reputations, including Peggy the possessed doll and Bela Lugosi’s mirror.

The standard tour is unsettling enough. The late-night flashlight tour turns off the lights entirely and hands you one flashlight, which is either the best or worst upgrade available depending on your constitution.

 

Ghost Stories at 1923 Prohibition Bar

 

For a smaller and stranger night, Ghost Stories runs as a mind-reading and dark magic show inside a speakeasy-style bar, playing Thursdays through Sundays. The room is small, and the performance sits somewhere between illusion and seance. It’s the closest thing in town to a proper parlor show.

Good call when the group has had enough of standing in lines.

 

Horror on the Big Screen

 

The Beverly Theater programs horror throughout October, running classics and cult titles across the month. Screenings pair with seasonal food and drinks, and the lineup tends to mix the obvious picks with deeper cuts.

Worth a midweek slot during Halloween week, when the parties haven’t started but the city’s already dressed for it.

 

 

More Las Vegas Halloween Events Around Town

 

A few others worth checking as dates firm up. Las Vegas Haunts runs multiple haunted house attractions across the season. The Magical Forest hosts HallOVeen, a family-friendly run of trick-or-treat stations, carnival rides, nightly entertainment, and decorated grounds through late October. And Springs Preserve holds its Día de Muertos festival in early November, with altars, mariachi, dance performances, and food that extend the season past Halloween itself.

Nightclubs across the city run costume parties on October 31 with visiting headliners, most of them 21 and over with cover charges that climb as the night goes on. Those lineups tend to be announced closer to the date.

 

Where to Stay

 

Most of the best Las Vegas Halloween parties this year sit within a few blocks of each other Downtown, which matters more on Halloween than any other night. Costumes are uncomfortable. Shoes are worse. Being able to walk back to the room, change, and come back out is worth more than proximity to any one venue.

Circa Las Vegas puts Haunted Heights upstairs, and the Fremont Street costume contest a block away, with the spooky festivities running across all three properties. The resort is 21 and over throughout, which on Halloween weekend is either a feature or a dealbreaker depending on who you’re traveling with.
